This is part of our “It Starts With You” series, highlighting how one action can bring about change in the community. While change is a community effort, it ultimately begins with each one of us choosing to take action.
Meet Burt Heacock and learn how it started with him.
How it started
My involvement with Second Story (previously Alternative House) began when I was recruited to join the Rotary Club of Tysons in January of 1997. At the time, our clubs major focus was raising funds to pay off the mortgage on one of Second Story’s programs.
Over time I learned more about the other Second Story programs, and I was both excited about the mission and impressed with the overall management. I had met Judith Dittman many times and when she invited me to serve on the board I was honored. Second Story continued to grow and take on more meaningful programs throughout Fairfax County. Over time I have been constantly impressed with what is now Second Story. Many charitable organizations have great intentions, but to deliver takes a real focus on fiscal responsibility.
Burt’s work today
I have been involved with Second Story in a variety of ways over the years. Initially, I did fundraising to help buy a facility. Later, I helped establish a relationship with the Fairfax County Firefighters which provided backpacks, coats, and toys. I have recruited other board members. I attended fundraising training, have supported fundraising efforts, and helped spread the word by introducing others to the organization.
