The Second Stories Podcast is dedicated to telling stories of people who had first stories full of hardship and hopelessness, yet were able to change the narrative and write a better second story. Theirs are stories of resilience and hope, but also tributes to the people, experiences and organizations that made it possible for them to start again.

Bella

Bella’s Second Story

The lice went away. But the stigma did not. "Bella" was embarrassed that she had experienced a lice episode and began avoiding Second Story in the Community after school. But everyone wanted her back.

Claire’s Second Story

"Claire" ran away after enduring sexual abuse from a father she barely knew. Second Story for Teens in Crisis helped with Child Protective Services, counseling, schoolwork, and a new foster family.

Tommy’s Second Story

After a life-shattering event, "Tommy" felt abandoned and unable to trust anyone. Second Story in the Community staff provided positive support and an innovative game to get him back on track.

Kayla’s Second Story

"Kayla" came into Second Story in the Community as a shy and confused young girl experiencing culture shock and struggling in school. In less than 6 months, Kayla transformed into a sociable, enthusiastic student.

"Ricky" could have become homeless or succumbed to those who prey upon youth living marginal lives. But Second Story in the Community provided him resources and support to write a different story.

"Tim" had unstable housing his whole life, compounded by mental health issues. Through Second Story for Homeless Youth he now has a home and a bike to get to work and school.

He was skipping meals, lacked space or privacy, and couldn't pay his tuition. Then "Aaron" found Second Story for Homeless Youth, and now he has stable housing and is finishing his associates degree.

Second Story for Homeless youth staff believed that there was more to "Cassie's" situation than met the eye, and that what she was experiencing was a result of an undiagnosed medical condition.

Your Impact

We make every dollar count. The direct support of young people, their families and their communities, is our first priority. Here are examples of how your donation may be used.

$20,000

  • Three high school students experiencing homelessness receive a full year of rental assistance and support services so they can remain in school and graduate with their class.

$1,000

  • One teenager receives a safe haven, warm bed, food, and round-the-clock support for five nights at Second Story for Teens in Crisis, or
  • Eight months of therapy for a young woman in the Second Story for Young Mothers program.

$500

  • One teen receives daily counseling during a three-week stay at Second Story for Teens in Crisis, or
  • Twenty counseling sessions for the children and teens who are at-risk and participating in our after-school programs.

$100

  • Three teens receive a therapy session at Second Story for Teens in Crisis, or
  • Two weeks of food for a young mother and her child at Second Story for Young Mothers.
