“Bianca” was used to bouncing around between houses when she was young, so when her parents got evicted she wasn’t too anxious at first. She went to live with her grandma, something she’d had to do before. This time, though, she couldn’t stay long, and she quickly realized she didn’t have anywhere else to go. She turned to an adult homeless shelter, and soon after she found out she was pregnant.
Bianca thought back to her childhood memories: of getting kicked out of apartments, of staying with different family members, of not having one place to call home for long periods of time. Then she thought of her baby on the way, and the life she was creating for him or her. She decided she wanted something different.
Bianca applied and was accepted to Second Story for Young Mothers. Second Story helped Bianca enroll in classes to become a medical assistant and apply for programs like WIC to assist her in providing for herself while she was looking for a job. Bianca is also attending life skills and parenting classes and working to budget and save money.
Bianca now has goals, ones she had never thought were in reach before. She hopes to get her driver’s license, buy a car, have a healthy baby, and finish school. With the help of Second Story she’s creating a healthier, more empowered life for she and her child.
