“Jess” and “Ron” were referred to Second Story for Homeless Youth’s Rapid Re-housing Program when Jess was eight months pregnant. They had nowhere else to turn and were living in an adult homeless shelter while trying to find affordable housing before their child’s birth. They knew a shelter wouldn’t offer the safety and stability they wanted for their young family, yet they couldn’t afford the region’s high rent costs despite their efforts to work while attending full-time school.
As soon as they met their Second Story for Homeless Youth (SSHY) case manager, they felt a sense of relief. Together, they pursued various housing leads and eventually connected with a landlord who was willing to work with the couple and the program. Through SSHY, Jess and Ron received rental assistance that allowed both to continue on their educational paths rather than dropping out of school to work the hours necessary to afford rent and living expenses.
Once settled in their new apartment, Jess and Ron’s case manager helped provide them with various essentials needed for their child, including baby supplies, equipment, and clothing. They also learned how to connect with necessary resources like food, clothing, and health care. By the time their baby was born, they felt settled and ready to take on the role of new parents. Through the program, they had access to life skills lessons, including financial and health literacy, to ensure they could learn to live as an independent family. By the time they graduated from the program, they managed to save enough to cover the rent on their own and reach their educational goals while managing the responsibilities of parenthood.
