After living in a homeless shelter with her two daughters for nearly three months, “Stephanie” was beginning to lose hope. Am I ever going to get out of this homeless shelter? Why can’t I find a place to live? Why is this so, so hard?
When the shelter connected Stephanie with Second Story for Homeless Youth, things began to improve. We first helped her find stable housing and covered her rent so that she could get out of the homeless shelter. We then began working with her on interview skills, building a resume, and applying for jobs. Before long, Stephanie was employed and earning a higher income job than ever before. She worked hard at her role, wanting to move up, and used her experience in the field to find a better job that let her save more money and earn more financial security. After just a year, Stephanie was able to pay for her housing completely on her own and maintain her own budget. So much had happened in a year; she couldn’t help but remember when she was in the shelter wondering if she would ever get out. Now, she was financially independent and had created stability and security for herself and her daughters.
Stephanie told Second Story staff that without the program she wasn’t sure she would have made it out of the shelter, and she never imagined that she’d be able to rent an apartment on her own. Staff are so proud of how far Stephanie has come, and thankful for the new life she’s been able to create for her family.
